The school began as a series of heated discussions in May and June of 1998 between Ayisatu Owen; her daughter, Miriam, a student at Techiman Secondary School; and James Mattison, Miriam's American cousin who had just completed his second year of undergraduate studies. They concluded that the local school system was not giving Miriam an adequate grounding in math or science. Ayisatu talked about opening a school, and James offered to organize American college students to help fund it or train teachers.

The school opened the following September with a single teacher and four students. Since then 23 foreign visitors have spent time working at the school. Among them are Gunther and Marita Bruns, a German couple who have made multiple trips to the school. Primary school teachers themselves, they have brought a mixture of music and drama to expand the range of teaching techniques available to the school.
